Simple Substitutes to Living a More Naturally Nourished Life

Wanting to step foot on a more natural path? Start here. This article discusses simple products that we use daily, weekly, or seasonally and all can be easily substituted for something more naturally nourishing for our exterior, interior, and aura.

Air Fresheners

We all desire for our spaces to smell inviting- our car, bathroom, bedroom, etc. Air fresheners provide a simple and inexpensive way to alter the natural scent of our spaces. At the same time as creating a warm vanilla aroma in your living room, a number of potentially hazardous air pollutants are being emitted. Studies have shown that typically only 10% of all volatile ingredients found in air fresheners are advertised on the label. Some of the volatile organic compounds found in air fresheners include: limonene, linalool, ethanol, benzene, and acetone. Various health effects caused by exposure of the compounds found in air fresheners include: migraine headaches, breathing difficulties, respiratory problems, and neurological issues. Protect your aura by choosing natural nourishment.

Sexy Ass has several products that can serve as air fresheners:

Candles and Perfumes

The fragrance that is added to candles and perfumes is what makes them so alluring and pleasing to the senses. While some candles and perfumes are made from natural fragrances, others are made from synthetic fragrances. Synthetic fragrances are chemical compounds produced from other chemicals in a lab setting intended to mimic a desired scent or create a completely new scent. Exposure to synthetic fragrance, whether you apply it to your own skin or you simply inhale it from someone else, can cause: skin irritation, headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath, and stimulate respiratory issues. It is hard to know what type of fragrance is used in candles and perfumes due to the fact that manufacturers do not have to include fragrance ingredients on product labels. If the ingredient list includes fragrance or perfume, the product could contain any type of natural fragrance or synthetic fragrance. It’s always best to check with the source/respective company.

The Sexy Ass products that are alluring in scent and could be used as a perfume supplement are:

Aside from this, most candles are made from paraffin wax, which when burned creates highly toxic benzene and toluene. Look for candles that are made from vegetable wax such as soy or beeswax. A non-candle option could be a room spray or to use a diffuser. All Sexy Ass hydrosols can serve as either.

Bug Spray

Depending on where you live, insect repellent is a must during part of the year. Unfortunately, most of the insect repellents found on the market contain harmful chemicals. DEET, though it does a great job at repelling insects for an extended period of time, has been linked to causing seizures, skin irritation, blisters, and even neurotoxicity. What we apply topically gets absorbed through the skin, which is scary to realize. Other harmful pesticides found in bug spray include: Cyfluthrin, Permethrin, and Pyrethroids. All of these have been linked to neurotoxicity, nausea, incoordination, and various other conditions. Maybe being exposed once or twice to these pesticides wouldn’t be of significant harm, but when we use these daily and over the course of years, we are causing consequential harm to our bodies and to the environment.

Choose a natural insect repellent such as Lemon Eucalyptus oil. Lemon Eucalyptus oil is extracted from the leaves from the Eucalyptus citriodora tree. It contains paramenthane-3.8-diol, which is a compound that makes it harder for mosquitoes and other insects to pick up on your skin odor.

Sunscreen

Soaking in the warmth of Vitamin D is super important! Protecting your skin from the harmful effects from too much UV radiation is also important. Receiving sun can be safe- if wearing the right protection.

There are a number of toxic ingredients found in common sunscreens that can be extremely harmful for you and also for the environment.

Oxybenzone: The chemical found most readily in sunscreen products. It is added because it absorbs UV-A ultraviolet rays, and is effective in achieving this, but it has been linked to a number of health concerns. Some of these including: toxicity in the organs, contact allergies, photoallergies (exposure to light is required to stimulate an allergic response), and interrupting the natural hormone system, also known as the endocrine system. Oxybenzone is also harmful to aquatic life.

The following places have a ban on sunscreens containing Oxybenzone:

  • Hawaii
  • Key West, Florida
  • California, in process
  • Virgin Islands
  • Aruba
  • Bonaire, in process
  • Palau

Octinoxate: Added to sunscreen products to protect the skin from UVB rays- not UVA rays. It has been linked to disruption to the endocrine system and to reproductive toxicity.

The following places have a ban on sunscreens containing Octinoxate in order to protect the coral reefs:

  • Hawaii
  • Key West, Florida
  • California, in process
  • Virgin Islands
  • Bonaire, in process
  • Palau

Homosalate: Added to sunscreen products to absorb UVB rays. It has been linked to hormone disruption and also increases the absorption rate of added chemicals to the skin- such as other ingredients found in the sunscreen or bug spray that is added in addition. Homosalate does not break down readily in nature, which is why it is harmful to the environment as well as us.
